Espadrilles: a piece of Spain on your feet

Espadrilles are perhaps the most iconic summer shoe. Not surprising, as espadrilles truly symbolize sun, sea, and sand, easy fashion, la vie bohémien, and classic simplicity.

But did you know, for example, that espadrilles became fashionable thanks to artists like Picasso and Dali? And thanks to Yves Saint Laurent: in the 70s, he designed a version with the famous wedge heel.

The origin of espadrilles probably lies in Egypt and around 1300 in Spain. They've been used for that long! Originally worn by farmers and artisans because they are so comfortable and cool. That is also the model you can buy at SA Design.

Handmade in Northern Spain

The original espadrilles, or alpargatas in Spanish, are still made in Spain.

SA Design espadrilles come from small workshops in Northern Spain, where craftsmanship is passed down from generation to generation. They are still handmade from natural materials. The sole is always made of jute and rubber and the upper of cotton canvas. Available in various colours, so you always have a good match for your outfit.

It is precisely this simplicity that makes an espadrille so special. No complicated techniques or artificial materials, but a shoe that has been made in much the same way for centuries and has long proven itself.

Why are espadrilles tight at first?

This is probably the most frequently asked question about espadrilles.

A true espadrille doesn't have a left or right foot when purchased, which is why they often feel a bit tight at first. This is normal.

As you wear them, the canvas molds to your foot, creating a left and right shape. After wearing them a few times, they often become more comfortable than many other summer shoes.

If you're unsure between two sizes, please contact us. We'd be happy to advise you on the correct size.

A shoe that never goes out of style

Perhaps that's the best thing about espadrilles. They don't follow trends but have been part of the summer street scene for generations.

You can wear them just as easily during a city walk as on holiday, in the garden, or simply at home. Lightweight, comfortable, and made according to a tradition that goes back centuries. Sometimes the simplest things are just the most beautiful.

Why we choose craftsmanship

At SA Design, we love materials that are processed with care. Craftsmanship that can be seen. And products that are not mass-produced, but carefully made. Our espadrilles are a prime example of this: handmade and visibly crafted.
