What is slow fashion (and why it can really benefit you!)
You hear it more and more often: slow fashion . But what does it actually mean? And what's in it for you?
In this blog we briefly explain: what is the difference between fast and slow fashion – and why that choice has much more impact than you think.
Fast fashion: quickly bought, quickly gone
Fast fashion is literally fast fashion. Quickly made, quickly bought, and often quickly discarded. You pick up something for a bargain price, wear it a few times, and then it disappears into the closet or the trash.
What many people don't know:
– Returns are rarely resold, but often destroyed
– Made in Italy sometimes only means that the label was placed there
– Expensive and cheap brands sometimes come from exactly the same factory
The materials are also designed to be quick. Just look at many sweaters in stores these days; they feel like natural materials like wool or cotton, but they're often made of polyester. That's cheap, easy to make in many colors – but not so good for people and the planet.
Slow fashion: conscious choice, awareness raising
Slow fashion is slower fashion. Not sluggish, but thoughtful. It's about quality, attention, and honest choices – both in production and purchasing.
At SA Design, for example, we use vegetable-tanned leather that takes 6 to 9 months to mature. We work with small batches, produce locally, and choose timeless designs that will last for years.
A good analogy? Think of an apple pie. You can get one at the supermarket, but if you bake it yourself, it takes a bit longer. Yet, it often tastes better – because you know how much time, attention, and love went into it. And because others see it too and remark, "Homemade, right? Delicious!" Why should fashion be any different?
What's in it for you?
If you choose slow fashion:
– Buy less, but better
– Are you wearing something that aligns with your values?
– Feel good about what you wear, every time
It gives peace, it feels honest – and it makes a difference.
Would you like to experience what that feels like?
In our workshops, you'll learn what it's like to make something with your own hands: a leather bag, shopper, or notebook. You choose the leather, the look, and the details. This way, you'll experience the true meaning of care and craftsmanship – and you'll go home with something that truly suits you.
